Franco Zeffirelli Dead - 'Romeo & Juliet' Director Dies at 96

Franco Zeffirelli has passed away at the age of 96.

The stylish Italian theater, opera, and film director died at his home at noon on Saturday (June 15) in Rome, Variety reports.

“He had suffered for a while, but he left in a peaceful way,” his son Luciano said.

Franco was Oscar-nominated for his 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.

He also directed, co-wrote, and co-produced the 1966 production of “Taming of the Shrew,” and he directed “La Boheme,” “Carmen,” “Othello,” “Hamlet,” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.”

Franco is survived by his children Luciano and Pippo.
