Katie Couric Has Breast Cancer, Reminds Women to Undergo Routine Mammogram

Katie Couric has announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 65-year-old former Today show host wrote in a post, “Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. On June 21st, I became one of them. As we approach #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, I wanted to share my personal story with you all and encourage you to get screened and understand that you may fall into a category of women who needs more than a mammogram.”

In an essay she published simultaneously, Katie wrote of finding out her diagnosis, I felt sick and the room started to spin, I was in the middle of an open office, so I walked to a corner and spoke quietly, my mouth unable to keep up with the questions swirling in my head.”

“Throughout the process, I kept thinking about two things: How lucky I was to have access to such incredible care, since so many people don’t,” Katie wrote. “It made me feel grateful and guilty — and angry that there’s a de facto caste system when it comes to healthcare in America.”

Katie just finished her treatments and said that apart from her breasts looking like she went “sunbathing topless,” she “felt fine.”

She also added that she was 6 months overdue for her annual mammogram.

“I was six months late this time. I shudder to think what might have happened if I had put it off longer,” she wrote.

We’re wishing Katie well and hope she makes a quick recovery.
