John McEnroe Won't Apologize for Serena Williams Comments

John McEnroe made some controversial comments about Serena Williams and where she would rank if she was playing the men’s circuit… and now he says he won’t apologize.

The former tennis star said that Serena, who he admitted is the greatest female tennis player in the world, would only rank #700 if she was playing in the men’s league.

Serena took to Twitter to respond to the comments and she rightfully did not seem happy about what he said.

While appearing on CBS This Morning on Tuesday (June 27), John was asked why he made the comments.

“I respect Serena very much so,” John said. When asked if he would like to apologize though, he said “no.” He did admit that his comments were “not necessary,” but he did not think they’d create controversy.

“I don’t want anything to go wrong with Serena because she’s pregnant. I don’t want to upset her or whatever it was. She’s – I think she was doing a tongue-in-cheek as well,” he added. “I can’t even believe we’re talking about it.”

Serena Williams Slams John McEnroe's Ranking Comments, Says 'Please Keep Me Out of Your Statements'

Serena Williams is responding to John McEnroe‘s comments about her ranking in tennis.

The 35-year-old tennis player took to Twitter to fire back at at the former tennis player after he said that she would only rank “like 700 in the world” among male tennis players.

“Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based,” Serena tweeted.

John did say that he thinks Serena is the best female tennis player in the world, but thinks it would be a “different story” if she played in the men’s circuit.

“Best female player ever – no question,” John said. He added, “If she played the men’s circuit, she’d be, like, 700 in the world.”

Serena also tweeted, “I’ve never played anyone ranked ‘there’ nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I’m trying to have a baby. Good day sir.”

John McEnroe Says Serena Williams Would Rank #700 Among Men

John McEnroe thinks that Serena Williams is the best female tennis player in the world, but he doesn’t think she can compare to any of the top male players in the sport.

The 58-year-old tennis legend, who won 23 Grand Slam titles in his career, made some controversial remarks in a new NPR interview.

“Best female player ever – no question,” John said. He added, “If she played the men’s circuit, she’d be, like, 700 in the world.”

“That doesn’t mean I don’t think Serena is an incredible player, I do,” John added. “The reality of what would happen on a given day is Serena could beat some players, I believe, because she is so incredibly strong mentally. But, if she had to just play the circuit – the men’s circuit – that would be an entirely different story.”

“Maybe at some point, a woman tennis player can be better than anybody. But I haven’t seen it in any other sport and I haven’t seen it in tennis. I suppose anything is possible at some stage,” he added.
