Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, the franchise tells its story across four movies.

It all started 12 years ago today (March 23) with The Hunger Games in 2012. Only three years later, the franchise closed out with 2015′s Mockingjay Part 2.

In honor of the movie’s big birthday, we did some digging and rustled up 10 secrets from the franchise, including details about Jennifer‘s pay and the scene she hated to film, on-set injuries, roles that almost went to other actors and the moment that resulted in damage to a sacred site.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth are so central to the success of the Hunger Games franchise that it is impossible to imagine the movies without them on the screen.

However, none of them were guaranteed their roles in the blockbusters.

Believe it or not, nine other actors auditioned to play Katniss before Jennifer was cast as the arrow-slinging star. Liam faced off against three other actors, too.

After Jennifer joined the movie, five stars were in the running to play Peeta Mellark, the boy with the bread. Of course, the role ultimately went to Josh, and he played it exceptionally in all four movies.
