The first reviews are in for VisionQuest, and critics have a lot to say about Marvel‘s latest Disney+ series.

Paul Bettany returns as Vision in the new show, which premieres Wednesday (October 14) on Disney+.

The series is the final chapter in the trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024.

James Spader also returns as Ultron, the villain he originally played in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The show follows Vision as he searches for answers about his identity and memories while dealing with the return of Ultron and a mysterious young man who may be his son.

Now, the reviews are arriving, and while some critics are praising the performances and emotional story, others aren’t as impressed.

What Are Critics Saying About VisionQuest?

Season 1 of VisionQuest currently has an 87% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of Monday (October 12).

The Hollywood Reporter has a mixed review, praising Paul and James for their performances while criticizing the show’s heavy focus on backstories.

Critic Angie Han writes that the show is “at its best when it’s simply focusing on its lead characters and sitting in the dynamics between them,” but notes that VisionQuest “has too much else on its mind, and too few ideas for how to explore them.”

Variety is also less enthusiastic.

Critic Alison Herman argues that the show struggles to make an emotional connection, saying that it “rehashes many of the same themes about recovering from loss” as WandaVision, but “doesn’t leave a lasting mark.”

TechRadar is much more positive in its 4 out of 5 star review.

Critic Tom Power praises the chemistry between Paul and James, calling the show a “scintillating slice of superhero science fiction,” as well as a “surprisingly deep and emotionally resonant conclusion to the Wanda/Vision Saga.”

Looper, however, gave the show a 4 out of 10.

Critic Alistair Ryder argues that the series feels “jarringly behind the times” and concludes that while VisionQuest is “not the worst MCU series,” it “might be the most passionless.”

ComingSoon rated the show a 7 out of 10.

Critic Jonathan Sim praises the show, acknowledging that its “ambition occasionally exceeds its execution,” but says VisionQuest is proof there “is still plenty of life left in Vision and Ultron.”

VisionQuest premieres Wednesday (October 14) on Disney+.
